Marketing: Find your client

So, now you know who you are...right?  That's great! Now you can begin to pinpoint your ideal clientele. I want you to think about your favorite people, you don't necessarily have to personally know them. Go ahead, think really hard. Now let's get ready to describe them.
  • How old are they?
  • What sort of job do they have?
  • What is their income level?
  • Do they have kids?
  • Do they have pets?
  • Where do they live?
  • What are their hobbies?
  • Where do they hang out at?
  • What is their typical weekend like?
  • Do they have any special quirks?
These are pretty basic, but it can lead you to figuring out exactly WHO you are trying to find. In the next post we will talk about how to lead these new ideal clients straight to your door.

Marketing: Who are you?

The most informative class that has helped my business aside from Drama (seriously, but I'll talk about that later), was marketing. It is likely that I enjoyed the class so much because the instructor actually knew and was able to convey tactics and theories, simply put, he knew his stuff!  With marketing, you have to pinpoint who you are - you absolutely have to, or at least I truly believe that you do.  So, let's embark on this journey to help you market your business, or more effectively, yourself.

Who are you? That is a loaded question, isn't it...
  1. What is your style:
  2. What type of personality do you have:
  3. Who do you photograph:
  4. What type of editing style do you have:
These are basic questions to start you off. The hard part is finding the answers, so let's get that started.

What is your personal style? How do you friends describe you? Trendy, Eclectic, Traditional, Whimsical, Vintage?
How do you define your personality? Quiet, Serious, Thoughtful, Strange, Awesome?
Who do you photograph? What makes your heart sing...Kids, Couples, Babies?
What type of editing style do you have? This is often one of the most difficult to pinpoint! My best advice is to browse your favorite photographers and choose 5 images that truly speak to you. What do they have in common? Doing this can also help to lead you in the direction of your personal shooting style if you're looking to narrow that down.
Before you can ever market your product, which in the case of photography is often yourself - you must first understand WHO you are before you can figure out who they are.

Automate: Your Content

Are you a procrastinator? Do you feel rushed to put out something fabulous and just aren't sure when or what to put out there? Let's talk about how to fix that!

Get a plan: Seriously, get a planner or a calendar of some sort and make it out (it can be vague) a month in advance. Just set it up so that you have some sort of goal written down for you to work toward.

Get to work: When you get a free minute (at 3am or so) start jotting down tidbits of information for the following week's posts, or even further in the future if you're an over-achiever. Every blog that I know of has the option to schedule posts in advance, use that to your advantage.

If you aren't sure what to post, check out my next series (next week) on finding your target market!

Automate: Your Interaction

Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest - Oh my! Social media is a huge part of marketing now days, for most business owners, it is the only marketing. The real question is do you have hours upon hours to sit at the computer to create the type of social media presence you need to be in demand? You can create the facade, and still have plenty of time in your day for all the other important things in your life by automating your presence.

Facebook: The spearhead to social media is FB, and they were fabulous enough to roll out the post scheduler not too long ago. You can write a witty post and have it scheduled to go live during peak hours (8am and 8pm), to maximize exposure...and you don't even have to be connected to the net when it does. To use your nifty scheduler, click the little clock icon and set your date and time for your post to publish.

Networked Blogs: This is an amazing way to ensure that your audience receives your blog posts, without having to actually be tethered to the net (I will discuss blog posting in the next post of this series). With NB you can syndicate your blog posts to automatically publish to your Facebook and Twitter feeds.

Pinterest: Who doesn't love this addicting site?! I know I do! With Pinterest you can create virtual pin boards of all of your favorite things, I suggest having a Photography (or whatever your business is) page, to help maximize your internet exposure. I also think that having a 'pin now' button is essential to blogging.

Pinning: When you pin your post, make sure it is a dynamic image (preferably with your logo). Make sure to use relevant key words in your description, along with your business name. This enables all of your followers to repin your blog and keep your presence going.

Automate: Your Schedule

This will be the first in a series of posts on automating your photography business, it is so incredibly important to do so if you want to have a home life :) Before I found this little gem of a scheduler I spent so much time jotting down information in my planner, trying to make sure that I get all of the necessary client information, sending out reminder emails, securing payment and so many more things and now it's all done for me!

Book{M} (part of Miller's Lab) is free, yes you read that right F.R.E.E! Free :)

Here are a few things I love about this scheduler.
  1. I set the availability. Block out dates, open times, minutes between sessions.
  2. They get reminders. You can choose how far in advance you want your clients to receive an email about their session.
  3. Client information. When they schedule they have to input their name, address, phone and any other details you want and keeps it stored for you.
  4. Have different schedules. Mommy & Me, Spring Minis, Senior Session, Full Session etc. You get to create however many you want, with all of the information right there.
  5. Payment required. No need to track anyone down to ensure they pay their session fee, in order to complete scheduling they have to pay (you can turn this option off).

It makes it easy to view your schedule and recently scheduled clients. View upcoming appointments or even by month. You can view it as a total calendar with all of your schedule/session types or go in and look at just one.

You can set all the boundaries you want, including every detail you could want in a and awesome!

You get to customize it as much as you like. Colors, information, payment, reminders, header and so much more that I'm sure I haven't even found yet!

I am not being compensated by Miller's Lab for this post, I seriously just love their scheduler!
